Pricing Tree Work – Some Insights for the Client

When it comes to tree work, nothing is really routine. Every job, every property, every tree is different. This is why when some customers call wanting to know a service price over the phone without a visit to see for ourselves, we tell them that is not entirely possible. We get it, though. Sometimes, people just want a ballpark figure to know whether to proceed. But, this is why we offer free estimates with no obligation.

A tree tech needs to lay eyes on the property to take measurements, note the layout of the land, check access for the machinery we would need, and if there is room for it. What does the canopy of the tree look like? How many branches are hanging over the roof? How far will the guys need to drag limbs to the chipper parked out front? Do we need to protect the sod, flower beds, pool, etc.? Then, there are factors like power lines, poison ivy, bee nests, the neighbor’s property, fences, gates, and street access.

Sometimes, we do ask for pictures and they help a bit with the overall layout of a yard. However, more often than not, those pictures can be deceiving when it come to depth, width, and height. If the quality of the picture is low, then things seem much smaller than they really are. Capturing a picture of a broken limb, a stump needing to be ground, or a panoramic view of the area around a tree is helpful to give us an idea of what we will be working with, but as for exact pricing, we cannot guarantee. But, again, we offer FREE ESTIMATES on any tree job, big or small.

Then, let’s talk about tree removals versus tree trimming. The two categories are very different because the work they entail do not compare. Believe it or not, many removal jobs are far easier than trimming and pruning. Why? For the simple reason that when pruning a tree, the arborist must be very precise on which limbs to cut, where to cut, and how much to cut to ensure the health and beauty of the tree. It’s an art that takes years to perfect. With tree removal, there is no risk of hurting a tree. The approach is completely different and there is no need to take meticulous care when cutting branches off. The precaution shifts to bringing down limbs while avoiding any damage to the property below.
