The majority of the calls we get from people interested in our tree work are pretty straightforward. In other words, someone needs us to prune a tree or handle a tree removal job, and we go to help. But every so often, we get one of those calls that every business dreads—where the person on the other end of the line is upset or even angry. Thankfully, it usually has nothing to do with us.
In other words, we’ve been mistaken for another crew that did a bad job. And if there’s one takeaway from that, it’s this:
Hiring the right people really does matter a lot in tree work.
An Unfortunate Case of Mistaken Identity
We received a call recently from a young couple. They were clearly upset and wanted to know if we were the tree service that had just done work on an open lot on Jannie Street in Denton. Ironically, our crew was on the way to Jannie Street at that exact moment, but it was for a residential job across the street that we hadn’t started yet.
I started to explain this to the caller, but was immediately cut off …
“But this is your sign on the corner, right?” One of the callers said.
“Yes, but that’s across the street, we …”
“Well, if you’re the one who cleared the lot across the street, y’all did a horrible job,” the caller interjected again.
We think it’s important to say that we don’t blame them for being upset. When our crew reached the property we were supposed to work on, they could clearly see a textbook hack job across the street. Whoever did it basically used a tiny tractor with a front bucket and just went through and ripped everything off without any thought for how the property might look when they were done. They left debris everywhere, to the point that it quickly became an eyesore for every resident on the street.
Naturally, a few concerned residents see a sign for tree work across the street and instantly assume we are the same company. The reality is that the sign was simply there to let people know we’d be working on that residential property in the coming days.
“So, you didn’t rent your equipment from Home Depot?” They questioned further.
“No, sir. It wasn’t us; I can promise you that. We don’t rent any of our equipment. We own all of our stuff,” we insisted.
The call ended a lot better than how it started, but it remains a perfect example of how hiring the right people matters with tree work. One of the hardest parts of this industry is that the public doesn’t always see the difference between companies. A sign is a sign. A truck is a truck. A crew is a crew. Therefore, it’s easy to assume everyone is a cheap, unlicensed operation. That couldn’t have been further from the truth, yet bad work ultimately reflects negatively on anyone nearby who looks even remotely similar.
And once that first impression is formed, it’s hard to undo.
Don’t Fall for the Other Guy!
If you need to hire someone for tree work, whether it’s to prune, remove, or take care of a large-scale land-clearing job, it’s important that you do your due diligence and ask the right questions before committing to let anyone work on your property. There are usually some telltale signs that you’ve found the right—or wrong—tree service.
Here are 5 reasons to hire a professional tree service company vs. the other guy:
1. They always have the right equipment — More than chainsaws, ropes, and harnesses, professional tree service and removal professionals utilize special lifts, stump grinders, and mulching machines. This helps them safely and efficiently tackle any tree service need, including accessing trees in tight spots or dangerously close to structures, power lines, fences, etc.
2. They’re true arborists — They know what’s best for trees and can make recommendations that many homeowners don’t realize. This includes education on the proper time of year to prune and how to spot a dying tree (green doesn’t always mean healthy). More importantly, they know how to examine each job to determine the safest place to cut and avoid causing additional damage or injury.
3. They protect your property from additional damage — To piggyback off the previous reason to hire a professional tree service company, it takes quite a bit of skill to remove trees and perform stump grinding services without trees falling on your home or business, hitting a gas line, or nicking a sprinkler head. No one’s perfect, of course — accidents happen from time to time. But they have resources and connections with other professionals to fix whatever did get damaged rather than cover up the damage and run away.
4. They are insured — Unlike the other guy, professional tree service professionals have all the proper insurance to cover themselves and the customer if something goes awry. In other words, you don’t have to worry about liability if something goes wrong.
5. They likely have plenty of referrals — There is no better peace of mind when hiring someone to take care of your trees than to know other homeowners have been satisfied with their work. A professional tree service professional is easy to find online, easy to communicate with, and should have more than enough Google reviews to prove they are the right company for the job.
I don’t know anything about the other guy from the story above. But judging by what I saw, they weren’t professionals.
And as the caller said, “They give everyone else a bad name.”
