While sitting down to write this post, I was reminded of a homeowner who called me about needing to get rid of a few roots. She initially hired what she thought was a professional tree service company (we’ll call him the other guy) to remove the tree, but he did a horrible job by leaving unfinished work behind. As soon as I showed up, I could tell this wasn’t a root issue at all.
The tree was gone, so kudos to him. But the entire stump was still there — smack dab in the middle of her yard.
Talk about an eyesore!
Instead of removing the tree AND the stump per their agreement, the other guy tried to cover up what he couldn’t do (or didn’t want to do) by piling up the leftover wood shavings from the tree to make it look like the job was done. The homeowner didn’t notice until it was too late. He got paid for the entire job — even though he didn’t complete it — and was never heard from again.
To make a long story short, it took us 10 minutes to grind the stump into nothingness with our SC70 Vermeer stump grinder. We showed our work to the homeowner, and she was more than happy to have her beautiful yard back.
- She no longer had a potential tripping hazard in the middle of her yard.
- She had the option to replant in that spot if she wanted.
- More importantly … she knew EXACTLY who to call next time.
Don’t Fall for the Other Guy!
One of the best things about Denton is how many beautiful trees we have. You know, the ones with deep roots, a massive canopy, green leaves for days, and strong limbs perfect for hanging a tire swing for the kids, providing shade for outdoor parties, and making your property the envy of the neighborhood. But to keep them looking strong, healthy, and beautiful, they have to be maintained.
This requires pruning, avoiding problems such as diseases and insects, and even knowing when to remove them.
It also requires hiring a professional tree service! Not some guy in an unmarked truck or your cousin Eddie from Wisconsin.
Here are 5 reasons to hire a professional tree service company vs. the other guy:
1. They always have the right equipment — More than chainsaws, ropes, and harnesses, professional tree service and removal professionals utilize special lifts, stump grinders, and mulching machines. This helps them safely and efficiently tackle any tree service need, including accessing trees in tight spots or dangerously close to structures, power lines, fences, etc.
2. They’re certified arborists — They know what’s best for trees and can make recommendations that many homeowners don’t realize. This includes education on the proper time of year to prune and how to spot a dying tree (green doesn’t always mean healthy). More importantly, they know how to examine each job to determine the safest place to cut and avoid causing additional damage or injury.
3. They protect your property from additional damage — To piggyback off the previous reason to hire a professional tree service company, it takes quite a bit of skill to remove trees and perform stump grinding services without trees falling on your home or business, hitting a gas line, or nicking a sprinkler head. No one’s perfect, of course — accidents happen from time to time. But they have resources and connections with other professionals to fix whatever did get damaged rather than cover up the damage and run away.
4. They are insured — Unlike the other guy, professional tree service professionals have all the proper insurance to cover themselves and the customer if something goes awry. In other words, you don’t have to worry about liability if something goes wrong.
5. They likely have plenty of referrals — There is no better peace of mind when hiring someone to take care of your trees than to know other homeowners have been satisfied with their work. A professional tree service professional is easy to find online, easy to communicate with, and should have more than enough Google reviews to prove they are the right company for the job.
I don’t know anything about the other guy from the story above. But judging by what I saw, they weren’t professionals. Perhaps they had an online presence, such as a website or Facebook page. They may have shown up with chainsaws and ropes, and maybe they were referred by someone the homeowner knew. But they weren’t professional.
If they were, they would have been honest about what they could or couldn’t do, and the homeowner wouldn’t have had to pay extra money to have someone else finish the job. It’s that simple, folks.
